Digestive System Body Tissues Histology Art (Canva)

The digestive system consists of the digestive tract, which is made up of a collection of hollow organs connected in a long, twisting tube from the mouth to the anus, as well as other organs that aid in the breakdown and absorption of food (see figure).

The mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine (sometimes known as the colon), rectum, and anus are the organs that make up the digestive tract. The mucosa lining is found inside these empty organs. The mucosa of the mouth, stomach, and small intestine contains microscopic glands that create fluids to aid in digestion. A layer of smooth muscle in the digestive tract helps break down food and move it down the track.

The liver and pancreas, two “solid” digestive organs, produce digestive juices that travel through small tubes called ducts to the intestine. The gallbladder reserves the digestive fluids produced by the liver until they are required in the gut. The digestive system is influenced by parts of the neurological and circulatory systems.
