Plicae circulares are permanent circular or semilunar folds consisting of mucosa and submucosa. These folds line the small intestine and they are best developed in the jejunum. The plicae increase the intestinal surface area by three-fold. Combined with the villi, and microvilli, the plicae make a total absorptive area of over 200 squared meters in the small intestine.

Muscularis externa or thick muscularis comprises smooth muscle cells organized as two or more sublayers. It is among the four main layers of the wall of the gastrointestinal tract. Together with the thick muscularis are the mucosa, submucosa, and serosa.

At the rectoanal junction, the simple columnar rectum lining is replaced by stratified squamous epithelium. This site is the boundary between the rectum and anus. It is near the anal canal or the distal end of the gastrointestinal tract.
