    Loop of Henle. The Loop of Henle (nephron loop) is a U-shaped structure with thin descending and ascending limbs, both of which are composed of simple squamous epithelia. The nephron loop works to reabsorb the water and sodium chloride from kidney filtrate. Three major functions of this urinary organ have been identified: (1) regulation of extracellular fluid volume; (2) regulation of potassium, magnesium, and calcium excretion at the lowest energy costs; and (3) regulation of urinary protein composition.

    Urethra. It is a tube that carries the urine from the bladder to the outside of the body. Its mucosa has prominent longitudinal folds, giving it a distinctive cross section appearance. In males, the two ducts for sperm transport during ejaculation join the urethra at the prostate gland. In females, the urethra is exclusively a urinary organ with a length of 3-5 cm lined initially with transitional epithelium which transitions to nonkeratinized stratified squamous epithelium.

    Renal Corpuscle. At the beginning of each nephron is a renal corpuscle about 200 μm in diameter and containing a tuft of glomerular capillaries surrounded by the glomerular (Bowman’s) capsule. Its visceral layer is made of podocytes, complex epithelial cells that cover each capillary, forming slit-like spaces between interdigitating processes called pedicels.
