Throughout my time studying HIS this semester, I have learned new things that gave me new perspectives on seeing laboratory work. I’ve learned that running a laboratory is complex and quite difficult without the necessary skills and procedures. And I’m thankful that I was able to learn these things. Honestly, it was kind of hard to keep up with the lessons because it’s so intricate. But I knew that it was going to be important so I did my best to follow through. I’ve also had the opportunity to learn about the laboratory from a chief medical technologist. And I’ve learned a lot of things starting from the concerns and challenges to the beautiful art of running tests and procedures. I know that HIS has a critical role in healthcare, but it’s just now that I learned about the details of why it is so.

The importance of material management in the clinical laboratory and household:

Material management is an important function in the clinical laboratory as it determines the quality of the test results and efficiency in the workflow. Having good material management practices allows the establishment to save money and resources as the resources are utilized in the most optimal way. In addition, this also ensures patient safety because proper handling of materials prevents errors from happening in the process. And, it is also important for establishments to consider having good material management to comply with regulations and standards about it. And in the household, good material management could mean reduced waste and reduced cost — improving sustainability and quality of life. That’s the fundamental idea of material management that is not only applicable to the laboratory and the household but also to any establishment.

What’s the difference between policy, processes, and procedures?

Policy refers to the set of guidelines or principles that needs to be followed when performing processes and making procedures. Basically, it provides the framework on which the process and procedures are based.

Processes refer to the activities carried out to complete a result. It’s a sequence of steps that are done to achieve a desired outcome.

Procedures refer to the instructions that are to be followed and it outlines the steps to complete a specific process.
