Medium: Color pencil
Description: 📚
The respiratory system provides a passageway for air to enter and exit the lungs for gas exchange. It’s divided into two main parts, the upper and lower respiratory tract. The upper tract primarily conducts, filters, and humidifies air before it goes into the lungs. The lower tract also does the same and also is where respiration takes place. The respiratory system includes the nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, and alveoli. Some of these structures are inside the lungs.
Portrayed tissues: 🎨
The epiglottis (1) is the structure in front of the larynx that prevents food and fluid from entering the respiratory tract. It has stratified squamous epithelium lining its surface.
The larynx (2) is the structure that contains the vocal cords. It is also lined with stratified squamous epithelium.
The bronchiole (3) are tubes that deliver air to and from the alveoli. They are composed of simple columnar to simple cuboidal epithelium depending on the location.
Lastly, the trachea (4) is a tube that is flexible and broad. It is lined with ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelium. It also lines just in front of the esophagus.
Note: All drawings were based on the microscopic images provided by our instructor.
