We grow and develop through learning and education, which have long been integral components of our lives, granting us deeper understanding of our world. Whether it’s science, mathematics, the English language, history, biology, or other fields, learning extends beyond academic subjects. It encompasses our interactions with people and self-discovery. True development occurs when we apply what we’ve studied in our lives, expanding our knowledge and understanding. In this way, we get to expand our knowledge and discover more about ourselves. Though some subjects may seem limited to academic pursuits, we find the essence of each subject when we correlate it with our livesโ€”when we see its purpose and significance to our lives. When we come to see it from this perspective and deeply understand ourselves, we are able to shape our character, approach problems in a much better way, and live a quality life. With this, we are able to develop holistically.
Of course, each of us cannot see this perspective easily. It takes time and experience. However, it would be better if we understood its significance earlier, as it can help young individuals become more capable, unleashing their full potential. Holistic development can be attained through holistic education. With the significance of education in an individual’s ability to gain knowledge and learn, itโ€™s better to utilize this as a way of helping young people and guiding them into shaping themselves as better people and individuals in society. This goal has been made possible as other organizations and institutions have promoted it by adding it to the curriculum. One of the leading examples of this is the United Board, which, along with Silliman University and other universities all over the world, has instilled this goal of nurturing and developing students through holistic education. In the article, Dr. Ben S. Malayang III, the twelfth president of Silliman University, expounded the idea of whole-person education and gave the goals and challenges of upbringing this program in the institutions. In his view, whole-person education builds competence, character, and faith in God for all students. Through these three goals, students will be able to develop and have a higher ability to learn, serve the community, and live life through God. Dr. Malayang also shared the challenges that come with this goal, highlighting the necessity of training educators to possess the same goals and holistic knowledge. Another challenge lies in creating opportunities within higher education institutions for students to engage in dialogues that help them recognize the struggles of others in their journey to have faith in the world. The greatest challenge in education is cultivating the ability to see oneself in others, fostering empathy and understanding among individuals with diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
Reading the article deepened my understanding and appreciation for Whole Person Education. I firmly believe that competence, character, and faith are essential elements that should be instilled in educational institutions. Knowledge becomes meaningful when it aligns with one’s character and moral compass. All my learning loses its essence if I don’t apply it to my life. As a student, Whole Person Education plays a pivotal role in shaping me into an individual who lives for the betterment of myself and society. It reminds me that education is not just about acquiring information; it’s about becoming the best version of myself, equipped not only with knowledge but also with the values and beliefs that guide my actions. Whole Person Education ensures that I don’t just exist but thrive, contributing positively to the world around me.
