A health information system (HIS) is a data management system used by healthcare sectors. This comprises systems for collecting, storing, managing, and transmitting a patient’s electronic medical record (EMR), hospital operational management, and healthcare policy decision support.

Data relating to the actions of providers and health organizations is also handled by health information systems. These might be used as part of a larger effort to enhance patient outcomes, inform research, and influence policy and decision-making. Security is a major problem since health information systems frequently access, handle, or keep huge amounts of sensitive data.
