Reflection on Paul’s Letter to the Romans (Chapters 4-6)

Paul uses Abraham as a symbol of righteousness and faith in Chapter 4. He emphasizes that Abraham’s righteousness resulted from trusting in God’s promises, rather than from following the law or performing good deeds. Paul raises a key point that justification is based on faith rather than works. This belief is fundamental to understanding salvation in Christianity, a religion where righteousness is attained through faith in God’s promises, particularly the promise of salvation through Christ. Chapter 5 continues to expand on the theme of justification by faith. Paul points out the peace that comes through justification, explaining that believers have been reconciled with God through Jesus Christ. He draws a comparison between the repercussions of Adam’s sin and the advantages of Christ’s righteousness. Adam’s sin brought death, but Christ’s righteousness brings life and grace. Paul discusses sin and how believers ought to respond to it in Chapter 6. He believes that baptism unites Christians with Christ in His suffering and resurrection. This union represents release from the grasp of sin. Although believers are no longer subject to sin, they should live as slaves to righteousness rather than using their freedom as an excuse for sin.
