Microscopic Photos of Urinary System Tissue Slides 4 years, 4 months ago The urinary bladder is a muscular sac that stores urine, allowing infrequent and voluntary urination. It is an expandable container for urine storage lined with an impermeable epithelium to water and ions.
Similar to the ureters, the bladder consists of four concentric layers:
Transitional Epithelium (Urothelium) contains the umbrella cells – the uppermost layer of cells that change shape in response to the distention of the bladder.
Lamina Propria – a thick layer of dense irregular connective tissue rich in collagen and elastic fibers.
Muscularis Externa – irregularly arranged smooth muscle that forms inner longitudinal, middle circular, and outer longitudinal layers.
Outer Layer of Connective Tissue – most of the bladder is externally covered with adventitia, with portions of its superior surface covered by serosa of the peritoneum.
