When I landed my feet on the port of Dumaguete, entered the vast halls of Silliman, and treaded past the side of enormous Acacia trees, I realized the detours in our lives certainly lead us to the most beautiful destinations where we are called to be. Day by day, as I continue to perceive my environment inside the campus, an exceptional feature I have always noticed and admired of the Silliamanians, both faculty and staff, is the CAPE that they wear every day. This cape is being manifested with competence, character, and compassion as they deal, interact, and socialize with other individuals, both on and off campus.
The C in cape stands for Civil; everyone, even inside the dorm I am staying at or the Silliman staff I get to ask for help with, maintains a courteous and respectful demeanor in interactions. Being civil, it shows respecting someone for who they are, albeit we are not in close terms or related. I value and appreciate this kind of attitude so much.
The A stands for appreciative; my friends, acquaintances, and even one of our janitors at the dorm appreciate small things whenever I have the chance to give even small things to them. Being appreciative is something a Sillimanian entails, which involves valuing the contributions and qualities of others.
The P stands for professionalism and passion; the former is that Sillimanians conduct themselves with integrity and excellence in school and at work. I see this from my teachers, who are also products of SU. The latter is passion, because I know that a Sillimanian is molded by his or her holistic development built in various aspects and a studentโs passion to continue each day, quenching the thirst for learning despite many impediments.
The last, E, is ethicality. The majority of the Silliamanian community, which I know and am acquainted with, adheres to a strong sense of moral principles and ethical conduct. This is due to the fact that we are treated with excessive solicitude by CHS instructors, fostering the value of education in a Christian orientation and thus offering reflective lifelong learners and transformative Christian witnesses.
This is why I believe a Sillimanian is someone who has a pure heart, one who embodies competence, character, and faith, from the first day of school and for the rest of his or her lifetime. The unique Silliman education is a metamorphosis that hones us from our baby steps towards flying and reaching for the stars. A Sillimanian has a perspective willing to serve the community as an independent, critical thinker who will soon be productive citizens of this country who will strive to create a remarkable change for the worldโs betterment.
What makes us different from other universities is the way we visualize a future filled with active Sillimanian professionals. An example of this is Hibalag 2023, where I get to witness different organizations filled with different people, all having similar goals. I realized that there are youths who are not indolent; there are youths wanting for achievements, progression, and accomplishmentsโand this is a powerful vessel that one should have. Now that I see great students, I know they will become virtuous leaders tomorrow.

My view of the mental aspect of man is that he or she is a multifaceted and complex individual who is interlaced with other dimensions of human existence, such as emotional, social, and spiritual; moreover, there are many schools of thought that shape our thoughts, behaviors, and experiences, which are vital to our being uniquely humans and influence our overall and holistic well-being.

Chapter 1 elucidates Paul’s description of Jesus Christ and His gospel, where people continuously reject God. Jesus was a descendant of King David, according to his human flesh, to fulfill prophecy, and the Father declared Jesus Christ as His son and proved it with power by raising Jesus from the dead. Paul continued and wrote that he was under an obligation to everyone to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ because Jesus himself gave him this order. He said he was not ashamed of the gospel, Romans 1:16: โFor I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ; for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.โ He was emboldened to preach because he knew the gospel is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes; God explained who He was to all people through creation, and everyone is without excuse if they reject God.God had numerous prophets foretell the coming of His son, Jesus, and declared Jesus as His Son by raising him from the dead. God wants people to know that since the beginning of human existence, His power and His divine nature have prevailed. But why do people not find it worthwhile to pursue that knowledge and look for other things rather than fulfill their spiritual satiation? So God gave them over to a perverse and darkened heart. God gave them what they wanted, and thus people fall into their manmade eternal damnation. Romans Chapter 1 made me reflect and realize I should never turn my back on Jesus. I will continue to repent for my sins, and I know He will never turn His back on me either.

Paul tells the Bible readers that God will repay everyone according to their deeds; to the godly, humane, and faithful person, He will repay to them eternal life in heaven; on the other hand, to the filthy sinner, with indignation. But is this really what God wants to happen for us?
I believe that the Lord wants us to gradually come to Him, and repent for our dark pasts, as I know He is patient and loving โ He will wait for the time for us to come back to Him. God wants us to know that He looks into peopleโs hearts, and if they do the things the law requires them to, God considers that as keeping the law and embedding the Holy Spirit within ourselves. Perhaps, this chapter is a message that God wants us to have His laws written on our hearts.

Godโs forgiveness and justification through Jesus Christ alone can save our souls. Everyone has sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, yet God has given people a gift of grace, whether we come back to Him or not. God will justify our sins, but he decided to show mercy to the people who place their faith in Jesus Christ. God determines what reality is, but then again, He is loving, patient, and kind.

Whole Person Education which was founded by the United Board โ a group of unions who encourage Christian higher education in Asia, deems of utmost salience in oneโs foundation of holistic development, aimed to elevate, enhance, and flourish the multi-faceted aspects of a personโs life: physically, spiritually, mentally, or emotionally. According to Silliman University, this is the approach to learning that is encapsulated in its tri-logical ministry of teaching, healing and preaching, providing opportunities of deep reflection towards an appreciation of self in relation to the larger community. In the course of time, humanity had realized that learning does not only lie inside the four vast walls in our classrooms, nor in our lectures or review notes. Learning, education, and development covers a wide horizon, beneath what and where we can possibly reachโ in diverse settings, various experiences, and people we interact with. Alongside this course, WPE, also entails and arrays the six areas of intelligence development including IQ (Intelligence Quotient), EQ (Emotional Intelligence), SQ (Social Intelligence), AQ (Adversity Intelligence), CQ (Cultural Intelligence) and FQ (Financial Intelligence). Certainly, they differ in aspects but all of which are essential in transforming the studentโs development. Multiple intelligence is deemed necessary in transforming students like me to not just dwell and be stagnated into one aspect โ but rather, to believe that a person himself has the capacity to associate and possess a range of different types of intelligence โ although one intelligence may be higher or lower than the other, for instance, Jolly has a high level of IQ but has low EQ. This boils down to make us understand and appreciate which strengths and weaknesses we have, develop these weaker areas, and appreciate the diversity of our own human intelligence.
Over the years, admitting it or not, we often tend to value IQ more over the rest, in view of the fact that we are somehow confined into the classroom, sometimes overwhelmed and pressured, only to go beyond academics and the pursuit of learning, but I believe we should be receptive and acquainted in obscured areas of what we are able to do, to not embed ourselves into one area of intelligence. In the end, we will be able to explore and realize that we are actually good at something.

Dr. Ben S. Malayang III, the twelfth president of Silliman University, without doubt, entailed salient contributions under his leadership, he was able to implement the universityโs 5 Cโs that have been fully recognized over the course of time. He emphasized the importance of learning WPE or Whole Person Education as well when he stated that it is an education committed to the total human development of a student, a learner transcending from the usual person he or she was before, and transforming into someone who is more progressed, who is better, improved, and exceptional. With a higher ability to serve, to live, learn, do, and see God โ by this statement, I am beckoned by the notion that this course subject will indeed help me navigate in the vast aspects of learning, spiritual, emotional, physical, physiological, etc. towards becoming a cognizant individual, endowed with productivity, sagacity, and wisdom, that eventually leads to satiation, or holistically complete. A person who can contribute to national development and be a young citizen with the goal and voice to uphold change in the community. Moreover, with the program being committed to surfacing the presence of Christian faith, I believe students like me will be able to succeed in shaping and honing ourselves in a way the essence of humane values will entwine in their lives in perpetuity. In the near future, when we will finally be able to attain success and face our own careers in life, we do not limit ourselves to just being typical alumni, but professionals who will bring forth transformative change, for the well-being of society and the environment. Malayang stated that \’being associated with Christian institutions should not be an impediment โ because the challenge will always be the extent to which higher education institutions can usher in opportunities for our students to enter into dialogue so that they are able to see how others are also struggling to have their faith in the world. That ability to see yourself in others is, I think, one of the great challenges of education in our time and in our region.\’ Higher education institutions affiliated with Christianity should not prevent people from attending or working there, regardless of their own religious beliefs. Inclusivity is important for people of all faiths to be able to come together and learn from each other, and higher education institutions should provide opportunities for this to happen.
I am hopeful and confident that at the end of the semester, I can say that I am a creative critical thinker, effective communicator, independent, transformative Christian witness, and a reflective lifelong learner.
Good Day, Sir, and hello everyone!
I believe that this subject, Whole Person Education, is the aspect of learning and development holistically, shaping life in all its parts, and developing the whole person โ intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, physically, and socially, in an ethical way. For instance, teaching one to be responsible for his or her own actions, to be independent and self-reliant, as a well-rounded education is of utmost salient for individuals to reach their full potential, foster growth ultimately, and contribute meaningfully and productively in society.
