    Activity 3: Circulatory Tissues

The circulatory system is responsible for transporting our blood in delivering essential substances to different parts of the body. Its main component is the cardiovascular system, which generally consists of the heart, arteries, capillaries, and veins.

Arteries carry blood with oxygen and other nutrients from the heart to our organs in our body, and they are found all throughout the body. It is composed of smooth muscles in the tunica intima and tunica media, the first two innermost layers, allowing for vasoconstriction and vasodilation. The next layer is the tunica externa or adventitia that connects to other tissues in the body, and they contain vascular nerves.

Veins return deoxygenated blood from the organs back to the heart. Like arteries, they are located all throughout the body and have the same three layers. However, their tunica intima and media are significantly thinner and the tunica adventitia is the thickest layer. They are different from arterioles as they have larger lumens. Most veins contain valves to prevent blood back-flow.

Vena cava, the largest vein, brings deoxygenated blood back to the right atrium of heart. Superior vena cava returns blood from the head, neck, arms and chest back to the heart. The inferior vena cava, which is much longer, brings blood from the legs, feet, abdomen, and pelvis organs back to the heart.

The spleen is located on the upper left side of the abdomen and it works by filtering blood of wastes and old red blood cells. It is covered with dense connective tissue that provides support.
