For the whole semester, I expected MT 14 as a subject focusing on only the computing aspect of the clinical laboratory. The course title was “Health Information System for Med Lab Science”, which supported my initial thoughts of having subject focused on the computing and technological aspect of being a Medical Technologist. Although the thought stuck with me for a few weeks, I quickly realized that it wasn’t only on the computing side, but of the general side of having a clinical laboratory. This subject introduced and presented to me how a clinical laboratory is established, managed, organized, and marketed to potential clients, which are patients who need to know what’s wrong with their health. Interviews and PowerPoint slides presented to me how clinical laboratories are run, with insights and first-hand exposure to the owners and supervisors of clinical laboratories such as doctors and RMTs. It exposed me to the idea of how the clinical laboratory is established and managed through policies and how tests can be assured of high quality and accuracy. A Laboratory Information System didn’t only handle patient data, but it also managed the operations of the clinical laboratory. It kept things organized and safe from potential threats of data leakage and exploitation. LIS tackled on the ethical and moral side of handling sensitive patient data, and its potential use either for exploitation or for benefit to public health monitoring. Also, this subject helped me know the benefit of having GetAProfessor and its potential in being used for spreading of useful academic information to not just for MT students, but for every student who wants to learn and have access to valuable knowledge. It helped me get exposed to basic computing and how software and AI models could help us in achieving even greater possibilities at a faster, efficient, and better way as compared to conventional activities. The world is changing fast and for the whole semester, this course has not failed in adapting and teaching us on how current technological advancements can be used for the benefit and development of healthcare and human health in general. The knowledge of having an LIS, exposure to real-world clinical laboratory operations, and application of every knowledge we consumed in this course has led me to a conclusion. This course has made a positive and remarkable experience for me in becoming, not just an RMT, but as a Physician who caters to the health needs of the public.
