GE 10 -DD| Reflections on Defining What is a Sillimanian |
A Sillimanian is not merely a title but an embodiment of a unique culture and ethos, rooted in the rich history and ideals of Silliman University. To me, being a Sillimanian means embracing a holistic vision of education, one that aligns with the institution’s powerful mission. The mission of Silliman University, which emphasizes infusing core values, instilling social consciousness, and cultivating a globally competitive academic community, adds even more depth to the concept of being a Sillimanian.
Being a Sillimanian means not only embracing academic excellence but also anchoring that pursuit in the core values inspired by the gospel of Jesus Christ. It means seeking knowledge not just for personal gain but for the greater purpose of nurturing faith, character, and competence. It’s an understanding that academic growth should go hand-in-hand with spiritual and ethical development, creating individuals who are not only knowledgeable but also compassionate and principled. Sillimanians are unique because we carry with us a deep sense of social consciousness and environmental stewardship. We recognize our role as responsible custodians of the world around us. This awareness translates into action, whether it’s in volunteering for community projects, advocating for environmental sustainability, or championing social justice causes. It’s a commitment to making the world a better place, reflecting the university’s mission to care for the environment and work toward societal well-being. Furthermore, being a Sillimanian means being part of an academic community that is not only resilient but globally competitive. We don’t just seek knowledge; we produce it. We don’t merely follow; we innovate. We’re not limited by borders; we actively contribute to sustainable development on a global scale. This commitment to knowledge production and innovation sets us apart, making us catalysts for positive change in an ever-evolving world.
What makes me a Sillimanian, and sets us apart from other students, is our commitment to this vision and mission. We are not just learners but stewards of life, tasked with the noble mission of advancing society’s well-being and safeguarding the environment. This transcends the boundaries of a typical student experience; it’s a profound responsibility that fuels our journey. Silliman University’s institutional goals resonate deeply with every Sillimanian. The emphasis on strengthening character, competence, and faith is the cornerstone of our education. Through Silliman’s 5 C’s (The Classroom, the Church, the (Athletic) Court, the Cultural Center, and the Community, each student is molded holistically in different settings, The classroom is not just a place for academic pursuit but a crucible where our character is forged, and our faith nurtured. The church provides us with the spiritual foundation that underpins our ethical compass, guiding us toward justice and compassion for others. The court exemplifies how Sillimanians can also excel in various sports, and the cultural center celebrates our diversity, fostering creativity and appreciation for art, while our service in the community showcases our commitment to social transformation. But it’s not just these goals; it’s the unique culture of Silliman University that shapes us. The Silliman Spirit, an intangible but palpable essence, infuses our journey with resilience, compassion, and a thirst for knowledge. It’s the camaraderie in our diverse community, where we learn not only from textbooks but from one another’s cultures and experiences. It’s the harmony of faith and reason, of intellectual curiosity and spiritual depth.
As a Sillimanian, I carry this spirit with me in every endeavor. It’s a torch that illuminates my path toward responsible stewardship, lifelong learning, and making a difference in the world. It’s a commitment to seek truth, embrace diversity, and strive for a just and humane society. In a world filled with students, being a Sillimanian is more than an identity; it’s a call to shape a better community for all.
| My View on the Mental Aspects of Man |
The profound intricacies of the human mind have always been a source of intrigue for me. I view the mental aspect of humanity as a captivating and complex realm that defines our individuality and shapes our interactions with the world. It is a domain where thoughts, emotions, and consciousness converge, giving rise to our unique perspectives and inner landscapes. What fascinates me most is the sheer diversity of human minds, each an intricate mosaic of experiences, beliefs, and emotions. It’s through understanding this diversity that we can connect on a deeper level, fostering empathy and compassion in our interactions with others.
In my everyday life, this perspective on the mental aspect of humanity plays a pivotal role as it guides my approach to interpersonal relationships, emphasizing the importance of active listening and seeking to understand others’ perspectives. By recognizing the complexity of the human mind, I strive to be more patient and empathetic in my interactions, appreciating that each individual’s thoughts and emotions are shaped by a unique set of experiences. Moreover, my fascination with the mental aspect of man extends to self-reflection. It encourages me to explore my own thoughts and emotions. By delving into the recesses of my mind, I gain insights into my motivations, fears, and aspirations, allowing me to make more informed decisions and navigate the uncharacteristic bouts of life’s challenges with greater resilience.
Much like the intricate facets of our individual minds, we, as complete beings, share an innate and intricate connection with one another that transcends the confines of language and mere words. This connection means that we are not solitary entities but rather pieces of a bigger human puzzle. This interconnectedness stems from our shared experiences, joys, sorrows, and aspirations, forming a universal language that bridges linguistic divides. It embodies compassion and our shared human essence, reaffirming that, at our core, we all yearn for the same fundamental things: love, understanding, and a sense of belonging.![]()

Section: GE 10 – DD| Thoughts & Reflections on Paul’s Letter to the Romans Chapters I, II, & III |
[1]
ROMANS CHAPTER I
Paul’s words in Romans Chapter 1 resonated deeply within me, mirroring the timeless toils and questions that have plagued humanity throughout the ages. This chapter, I believe, reflects our innate desires, our failings, and ultimately, our need for redemption. In the opening verses, Paul speaks of the power of the Gospel, a message that transcends time and space and like a gentle whisper, stirs the deepest recesses of the human heart. For me, this resounds with the moments in life when we yearn for something more deep, when we feel an unexplainable emptiness that material possessions and worldly pursuits simply can’t fill. Romans Chapter 1 serves as a reminder that the Gospel is the answer to that longing, a timeless solution to our existential questions. However, as I read on, I couldn’t help but confront the uncomfortable truths presented in this chapter. Because, let’s face it, truth, in some ways, can be a bitter pill to swallow. Paul unapologetically discusses the consequences of suppressing the truth about God. It made me reflect on the times when I’ve turned a blind eye to my conscience, ignoring the moral principles within me. It’s a humbling reminder that, even in our modern world, we are not immune to the human condition, to the temptation of ignoring our inner voice.
Paul paints a vivid picture of how humanity has exchanged the glory of God for created things. This hit close to home, as I realized how easily we can be ensnared by the pursuit of wealth, success, or even social validation, often at the expense of our spiritual well-being. This, for me, was a wake-up call, nudging us to try to reevaluate our priorities and seek a deeper connection with the Divine Himself. Yet, amidst the sobering truths, Romans Chapter 1 is also a testament to God’s relentless love and patience for all of us. It reminds us that even in our waywardness, God continues to extend His grace and invitation to return to Him. This speaks to me on a personal level, as I’ve experienced moments of redemption and transformation in my own life that, although painfully excruciating, were also very rewarding to overcome knowing that I had my faith in God with me. It’s a reassuring reminder that no matter how far we may have strayed, there is always a path back to God’s embrace.
This chapter of the Book of Romans genuinely speaks directly to the human soul. It challenges us to confront our shortcomings, recognize the idols we’ve erected in our lives, and embrace the encouraging and transformational power of the Gospel. It is a chapter that reminds us that our pursuit of meaning and fulfillment finds its ultimate resolution in our relationship with God. It’s not just a text from the past; it’s a living message that continues to shape and edify our spiritual journey today.

ROMANS CHAPTER II
Upon reading the pages of Romans Chapter 2, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of unease. Unlike the previous chapter, which focused on the external world and the suppression of truth, this chapter turns the spotlight inward, which helps us to confront the intricacies of human judgment and our inherent capacity for hypocrisy. Paul’s words in Romans 2 helped me realize on our tendency to pass judgment on others while conveniently ignoring our own flaws. There are real instances where I’ve found myself all too often quick to point out the speck in someone else’s eye while neglecting the log in my own. It’s humbling that we’re all susceptible to the same human frailties, and that true authenticity begins with self-awareness.God judges impartially based on our deeds, not our status or religious affiliations. This feels especially relevant in a world where appearances can often deceive us. Authentic faith isn’t about outward displays but rather the genuine transformation of the heart.
Other than that, the circumcision of the heart strikes a chord within me because it really prompts me to move beyond mere rituals and superficial religiosity and instead focus on a deep, personal relationship with God. I’ve come to understand that faith is not a checklist of religious practices but a continuous, heart-centered connection with the Divine. Romans Chapter II really encourages us to strip away the masks of hypocrisy that we all have and seek a more authentic and heartfelt relationship with God. Our faith should manifest in our actions and attitudes, not just in our words or appearances. It’s a timeless call to humility and the pursuit of our faith that will transform not only our behavior but also our very hearts.

Romans CHAPTER III
Romans Chapter 3 is a message about the universality of human brokenness and the hope of redemption. Paul’s words cut to the core of our inherent human experience, forcing us to confront our shortcomings and, in doing so, find the path to righteousness. The chapter begins by reminding us that no one is exempt from the grip of sin; all have fallen short of the glory of God. This truth is relatable to me, as I’ve grappled with my own imperfections and witnessed the struggles of those around me. In our pursuit of righteousness, we are all on level ground, united by our shared humanity. Yet, amid this sobering recognition of our collective brokenness, this chapter really reminds us to be hopeful and that in every cloud, there is always a silver lining. It introduces the concept of justification through faith in Christ. This idea struck me personally because righteousness is not something we can achieve through our own efforts alone. Instead, it’s a gift of grace, offered to us through faith. This has been a source of comfort and reassurance in my own spirituality, reminding me that I don’t have to carry the burden of perfectionism.
It’s easy to question the fairness of a God who judges the world, but Paul reiterates the consistency of God’s character. Undoubtedly, there were moments in my life when I questioned the justice of certain circumstances, only to later realize that God’s plan was working in ways I couldn’t initially comprehend. Romans Chapter 3 reminded me that faith is not a solitary endeavor but a universal journey. No matter how broken we may feel, there is hope in God’s grace and the gift of righteousness through faith. It is given that humans are sinful by nature and that despite all of this, we also need to embrace the unmerited gift of redemption and find reassurance in the consistency of God’s character. In doing so, we can move forward with a renewed sense of purpose, knowing that our brokenness is not the end of the story but the beginning of a journey towards righteousness.

SUBJECT & SECTION : GE 10 – DD📑 Personal Thoughts & Reflections on: “What is Whole Person Education and Multiple Intelligence?”
🔗Link to the Article: https://www.knewstep.com/what-is-whole-person-education-and-multiple-intelligence/
As a student, I wholeheartedly resonate with the idea presented in the article that intelligence is not solely determined by our IQ. The concept of whole person education and multiple intelligences, encompassing EQ, SQ, AQ, CQ, and FQ, is a powerful reminder that our intellectual growth extends far beyond the rote memorization and academic prowess that IQ often tends to emphasize. This resonates deeply within the corridors of my personal experiences and beliefs.
I firmly believe that our emotional intelligence (EQ) plays a pivotal role in our success and well-being. College life is not just about acing exams; it’s also about navigating complex social dynamics, managing stress, and building meaningful relationships. Moreover, the mention of financial intelligence (FQ) strikes a chord with me as a college student managing my finances. Being away from home really taught me the skill to save money and helped me realize just how to value money. It’s easy to fall into the trap of impulsive spending on things we want but don’t necessarily need. I’ve learned the importance of budgeting and making responsible financial decisions. This aspect of intelligence extends beyond the campus, as it prepares us for the real-world challenges of managing our own income and expenses, which is a skill I know will serve me well in the future.
The emphasis on social intelligence (SQ) also hits home. College is a time when we forge new friendships, collaborate on projects, and engage in diverse social experiences. Understanding how to navigate these social interactions, develop empathy, and build meaningful connections is crucial not only for academic success but also for personal happiness. Furthermore, the article’s mention of adversity intelligence (AQ) resonates deeply with me. College is a time of challenges and setbacks, and developing resilience in the face of adversity is essential. I’ve encountered academic hurdles and personal setbacks, but these experiences have taught me the importance of perseverance and adaptability. AQ is a reminder that intelligence is not just about how much we know but also about how we respond to life’s challenges.
Taking everything into account, I firmly believe that intelligence extends well beyond IQ. Whole person education, encompassing EQ, SQ, AQ, CQ, and FQ, is a holistic approach that prepares us for the complexities of college life and beyond. The concept of whole person education, as highlighted in the article, is a paradigm shift that acknowledges the multifaceted nature of human intelligence. Whole person education reminds us that our growth is not solely determined by our academic achievements or IQ scores. This article reinforces my conviction that intelligence is multidimensional, and it serves as a reminder to continue nurturing these various facets of intelligence as I progress through my college journey and into the future. Embracing whole person education enriches our college experience and equips us not only with the knowledge to excel academically but also with the wisdom to lead a balanced, fulfilling life beyond the classroom.

Dr. Ben S. Malayang III’s vision of Whole Person Education is nothing short of revolutionary, and I wholeheartedly believe in its transformational power. In an era where education often feels confined to textbooks and exams, his definition of education as a holistic process that builds competence, character, and faith is truly a breath of fresh air. Silliman’s emphasis on interaction in various venues, including the classroom, the Church, the cultural center, the athletic court, and the community, has enriched my educational experience in countless ways. It has taught me that learning doesn’t occur in isolation but thrives when it engages with diverse perspectives, cultural values, and real-world challenges. Furthermore, Dr. Malayang’s mention of the silent curriculum – that unspoken but vital aspect of education focused on integrity, leadership, and faith strikes me as a fundamental truth. These qualities are essential not only for success in one’s profession but also for becoming a responsible and empathetic member of society.
