Steeped in history and architectural elegance, the Silliman Hall at Silliman University, Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, is more than just a building; it’s a living proof to the evolution of both this institution and the very landscape of American architecture. Constructed in the early 1900s, the Silliman Hall marked a significant milestone as the inaugural structure following the establishment of Silliman Institute in 1903.
The building is renowned for its distinctive Stick Style architecture, a vital transition between the Carpenter Gothic of the mid-19th century. Its hallmark ‘stickwork’ design, featuring exposed timber frames with overlaid board strips on the facade, encapsulates a rich era of architectural transformation.
Why do I hold this building in such high regard? It’s not solely due to its historical significance, but rather the profound sense of connection it fosters. The Silliman Hall has been the backdrop to countless scholarly pursuits, intellectual debates, and moments of enlightenment. It simply becomes a trademark of the campus itself.
