Muscle tissue is made up of cells that can shorten or contract to cause body movement. It is densely packed with cells and has an abundance of blood vessels. The cells are long and slender and are sometimes referred to as muscle fibers. They are usually in bundles surrounded by connective tissue. Actin and myosin are contractile proteins found in muscle tissues.

Muscle tissue is divided into three categories: skeletal muscle tissue, smooth muscle tissue, and cardiac muscle tissue. Skeletal muscle fibers are cylindrical, striated, multinucleated, and voluntarily controlled. Both the smooth muscle and cardiac muscle are controlled involuntarily. Smooth muscle fibers are spindle-shaped, uninucleated, and lack striations while cardiac muscles are branching fibers, with one nucleus per cell, have striations and intercalated disks.
