    Philippine Healthcare System

    • -The WHO refers to the Filipino Healthcare System as “fragmented”. There is a history of unfair and unequal access to health services that significantly affects the poor. The government spends little money on the program which causes high-pocket spending. Out of the 100 million people living in the Philippines, many do not get access to basic care. The country has a high maternal and newborn mortality rate, and high fertility rates which creates problems, especially for those who have limited access to basic care and for those living in generally poor conditions. the public health care in the Philippines faces some limitations despite having achieved universal healthcare, the Philippines still struggles with equal access to medical care. Public healthcare in the Philippines is administered by PhilHealth, a government-owned corporation. PhilHealth subsidizes a variety of treatments including inpatient care and non-emergency surgeries. Private healthcare services are well established and grown in the Philippines. Although doctors in private hospitals are as good as doctors practicing in public centers. Private facilities are much better equipped and treatment is typically faster. Private services are considered to be expensive by locals but are relatively cheap by most expat standards. The relative affordability of private healthcare can be seen in the increasing popularity of the Philippines as a medical tourism destination.
