THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
Maria Dayamina L. Jimenez
MT 13 – GHWhy do we need to breathe? Because we need oxygen, and at the same time, we need to eject Carbon Dioxide from our bodies!
The exchange Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide is made to life by the Respiratory System. It is essential for the metabolism and proper functioning of our body’s cells to meet the demands of our body. The Respiratory System is a complex and vital system in the human body. Comprising a network of conducting passageways and the respiratory zone, this system ensures the delivery of oxygen to cells and remove carbon dioxide, a byproduct of cell metabolism that becomes toxic when accumulated in the body.
When oxygen is breathed in, it diffuses into the bloodstream from the alveoli and binds to hemoglobin in red blood cells to be transported to tissues. Concurrently, the blood’s supply of carbon dioxide, which is generated by cellular metabolism, diffuses into the alveoli for exhalation. This well-planned procedure guarantees a steady flow of oxygen to fulfill the body’s metabolic needs.
The brainstem’s respiratory center is in charge of the breathing system. Breathing depth and pace are controlled by this center according to blood pH, carbon dioxide, and oxygen concentrations, among other variables. The sneeze and cough reflexes are examples of reflex systems that help to preserve the respiratory system’s integrity.
I chose to delve into the intricacies of the respiratory system because of its fundamental role in human physiology and its direct relevance to my chosen profession as a medical technologist. Understanding the respiratory system is pivotal for healthcare professionals, as it not only serves as a cornerstone in anatomy and physiology but also plays a crucial role in the diagnosis and management of various medical conditions.
