Topics: Health System, Philippine Health System, Primary Health Care

The video below incorporates the three aforementioned topics which will enable you to have a better understanding of their relationship and how they affect the society.

    • The healthcare system in the Philippines is divided into two sectors: the public and private systems. These two largely differ in the quality of services provided. The medical practitioners and healthcare providers, especially in the public sector, are highly trained and qualified, but the facilities where they work in offer a poor functional condition. The private healthcare system in our country is more consistent and sophisticated than the public one which is observably inadequate, specifically in rural areas. When we look at the situation of healthcare in highly urbanized areas, we only see its surface. There are still more people who are under the basic units of society and are in need of access to quality healthcare services. Therefore, it was very heartwarming to know that there are local physicians, nurses, medical assistants, and volunteers, who genuinely care for those people. Their methods or approaches in delivering primary health care in different communities in Visayas are patient-centered. They didn’t focus solely on the idea of treatment, they also emphasized the value of preventing illnesses from taking place—that is to have a healthy lifestyle. Even though it’s hard to enforce community and public health programs, they still try their best to offer what the people deserve. Despite the difficulties financially, the volunteers used their connections to collect funds for cure and medications in order to make healthcare somehow affordable, accessible, and scientific. Additionally, one of the things that I like about their advocacy is the awareness-raising program. Primary health care is being presented to people through education. It is important for them to have sufficient knowledge about what they can do to be healthy and avoid sickness. Moreover, a center is built to train students (scholars) who aspire to contribute in the medical field, honing their capabilities and skills into becoming future efficient health professionals. Indeed, the fight for the values of equity, social solidarity, and the right of every individual to experience the highest attainable standard of health are being exemplified in this video. Their action may just be a small fraction of what all the citizens of the Philippines demand, but it means that there is something being done to the problems of our health system.
