Good health is essential for us to participate in our community and to lead a productive and fulfilling life. Healthcare exists to mean in every aspect to facilitate our well-being including service and payment mechanisms. It has provisions for health services to every individual — the healthcare interaction involves a wide range of entities like laboratories, doctor’s offices/fees, pharmacies, nursing homes, hospitals, and many more. The Philippines’ dual healthcare delivery system, which is the public and private sector, aims to provide care and advocate for the public with health information disclosure — but at what cost when hospitals, medications, and other services are beyond reach to some rural places and are expensive but very cheap to expats. Our country’s healthcare delivery system has a lot of flaws, it faces a lot of challenges like being understaffed since our medical staffs migrate to western countries for better salary income. Another challenge is our diagnostic medicines being limited, unequal access to medical care, facilities being out of date, political dynasties, and lastly, lack of equipment. Because we live in a third-world country, we have poor lifestyles that steer us to the leading illnesses; hypertension, diabetes, and kidney diseases, and because most Filipinos are having financial troubles our government has endorsed insurance to cover medical expenses, there is international and local insurance. We are familiar with PhilHealth, a national health insurance program to provide coverage for indigent families and those with limited financial resources. The government has declared RA 11223, or the universal healthcare law which will further develop and improve access to quality health services where every Filipino citizen must enroll to receive benefits since most of the population relies on the healthcare system while expats also have health options.
