Are GMOs bad for the environment?
On one side we have GMOs that are “not bad” for the environment. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) may help the environment in many ways. According to research, In 2016 alone, growing GMO crops helped decrease CO2 emissions equivalent to taking 16.7 million cars off the road for an entire year. Producing GMOs also help preserve soil, conserve water, and avoid using pesticides.
On the other side of the debate, we have GMOs causing the overuse of herbicides resulting in the excessive eradication of wild plants from farmland that have been shown to harm the environment, contamination of the natural flora which could result in serious ecological, economic, and social impacts and the development of “superweeds” and “super pests”.
Overall, there’s still a lot of research that needs to be done to have a valid conclusion on whether GMOs are really safe for the environment.
