					<span>The healthy vaginal mucosa of women of reproductive age consists of many layers of stratified squamous epithelium atop a lamina propria. The epithelium differentiates and comprises many distinct layers or \"strata\": the mitotically active basal layer (\"stratum basale\"), the superbasal layer (\"stratum superbasale\"), and a superficial layer of flattened cornified cells (\"stratum corneum\"). Below the epithelium is a deep layer of connective tissue, similar to the skin\'s dermis. This is followed by a layer of loose connective tissue containing numerous blood arteries and nerves. Due to the production and storage of glycogen, the cells of the vaginal wall normally contain a substantial amount of cytoplasm.</span>

It promotes muscle contraction, fosters awareness of one\'s surroundings, and is involved in the processing of emotions, memory, and thinking.
