The respiratory tract is lined with respiratory epithelial cells from the trachea to the bronchi, which divide into bronchioles and alveolar sacs. The basic tasks of the respiratory epithelium are to moisten, protect the airway tract from pathogens, infections, and tissue injury, and facilitate gas exchange, depending on their origin. In the trachea and bronchi, the respiratory epithelium is pseudostratified and largely comprises of three cell types: cilia cells, goblet cells, and basal cells.
