Microscopic Photos of Reproductive System Tissue Slides 3 years, 11 months ago The healthy vaginal mucosa of women of reproductive age consists of many layers of stratified squamous epithelium atop a lamina propria. The epithelium differentiates and comprises many distinct layers or “strata”: the mitotically active basal layer (“stratum basale”), the superbasal layer (“stratum superbasale”), and a superficial layer of flattened cornified cells (“stratum corneum”). Below the epithelium is a deep layer of connective tissue, similar to the skin’s dermis. This is followed by a layer of loose connective tissue containing numerous blood arteries and nerves. Due to the production and storage of glycogen, the cells of the vaginal wall normally contain a substantial amount of cytoplasm.-
