Dracarys! When Sir Los Baños gave us the instructions for this output, I immediately thought: How could I possibly creatively interpret a cell? Do I draw it? Make a song about it? What if a cell was this? What if a cell was that? I went through a lot of questions. But then I thought, what if I incorporate what a cell looks like into something I love, something I’m obsessed with? And voila! An idea was born.
From the sun-scorched deserts of Dorne to the towering stronghold of Casterly Rock, I give you A Song of Organelles, the official map of Cell Westeros.
My map reimagines the cell as the world of Westeros from Game of Thrones, with a castle and its ruling house representing each organelle. For instance, Winterfell, ruled by House Stark, is the peroxisome. Just as peroxisomes protect the cell by breaking down harmful substances, the Starks stand as the guardians of the North, defending Westeros from danger. Casterly Rock, under House Lannister, is the mitochondria, providing energy and wealth to power the realm, just as the mitochondria fuel the cell.
By putting together the wonders of biology and the epic world of Westeros, I aim to bring a creative twist to the understanding of how a cell works. And show that even the smallest structures can hold the weight of seven kingdoms.
Seven blessings to all of you.
