The integumentary system is the body’s largest organ, serving to protect and maintain the internal environment by acting as a physical barrier between the external and internal environments. The epidermis, dermis, hypodermis, glands, hair, and nails are all part of the integumentary system. This system regulates body temperature, maintains cell fluid, synthesizes Vitamin D, and detects stimuli in addition to its barrier function. To carry out these activities, the many components of this system collaborate—for example, body temperature regulation is accomplished through thermoreceptors, which regulate peripheral blood flow, perspiration, and body hair.
