Reflection on the Silliman University Motto:
Via, Veritas, Vita

Via, Veritas, Vita is a Latin phrase which when translated to English, means the way, the truth, and the life. These are the words to which Jesus Christ described Himself in John 14:6 which pertained to how following in His footsteps and seeking His guidance is the key to a better understanding of life, as well as a more fulfilling one at that. This motto perfectly coincides with the school’s vision and mission as God-centeredness and continued faith in Christ are paramount to this institution. Looking over each aspect of the motto, ‘the way’ that is talked about in this context is how Jesus Christ is our guiding compass who helps us circumnavigate the obstacles and challenges we face so that the journey we take ends in the destination we wish to reach. As long as we continue to believe in Him and practice our religion, we will always find our way and never truly be lost. Following that is, ‘the truth’ as any semblance of doubt or ill-informed notions that can bring us down are all dismissed through our faith. God brings us the truth and frees us from the forces of temptation that shackle us to sin. Furthermore, lies and deceit hold no place in the teachings of Jesus Christ. Lastly, ‘the life’ talks about how our connection to God is an integral part of our lives and how the teachings of Jesus Christ should always be in our core. As we now looked at these aspects individually, we can see how they all perfectly come together to give us the message that Silliman University is instilling within us. That being by setting this as their motto, our university is reminding us that across this journey that we are on, we must never lose our way, we must always search for the truth amidst the lies, and we must never forget to follow in Jesus Christ—our north star who will continue to guide us throughout our entire lives.
