    RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
    Larynx. It is a short (4 cm x 4 cm) air passage between the pharynx and trachea. Hyaline cartilage and smaller elastic cartilages reinforce its rigid wall. It helps maintain an open airway. Moreover, movements of these cartilages by skeletal muscles participate in sound production during phonation, i.e., the production of speech.

    Nasal Cavity. The internal nasal cavity and the external dilated vestibule make up the left and right nasal cavities. The nasal cavity works to warm and humidify the inspired (inhaled) air. When this air passes through, the nasal cavity eliminates airborne particles and other debris before it reaches the lower respiratory tract.

    Esophagus. The esophagus of the digestive tract and the trachea of the respiratory tract have a unique relationship. Both are muscular tubes located within the neck but they have different functions. While the esophagus transports food and liquid from the throat to the stomach, the trachea transports air in and out of the lungs. During swallowing, the trachealis muscle relaxes so that the esophagus can bulge into the trachea’s lumen to allow food or water passage into the stomach and to avoid accidental entry into the respiratory tract.
