ENVIRONMENT: Sacred Fig/Bodhi Tree (Ficus religiosa) is a fast-growing, invasive plant species that was introduced in the Philippines. The species epithet “religiosa” was coined due the fact that it is considered as sacred both in the Hindu and Buddhist tradition. In fact, Buddhists believe that this was the tree where Siddhartha Gautama Buddha meditated and achieved enlightenment (bodhi). The plant starts off as an epiphyte either on concrete buildings or on the branches/trunk of other trees. It is considered invasive since it strangles the tree to which it sprouted as it grows and reaches for the soil. F. religiosa is also a persistent problem in cities since it damages building to which it attaches as substrate during its early stages of growth.
