The medical laboratory has a distinctive role and serves as the center of the operation in the hospital nowadays, in utilizing the advancement of technology, the traditional way of processing specimens and results evolved making its way to a big advancement with automated medical procedures which aid the needs of the patients through the technological process. It has been said that LIS began in 1982 when laboratories were introduced to the early centralized minicomputers with technical recording tools (AltexSoft, 2020).
A laboratory information system was created to process and manage the medical operations and procedures that are being utilized by medical professionals in data management and various processing of patients’ specimens, posting testing schedules, tracking specimens and their information, and giving automated test results which establish an accurate and quick diagnosis for patients.
The major components of laboratory information systems involve managing laboratory procedures and systematically recording and registering patient’s information and tracking specimens, test processing, labeling, collecting specimens, and storage organizations. It gives an easier way for the laboratory technicians to connect with the patients by entering their test results which contain the type of test being taken, the tool being used, and further instructions or protocols to be followed by the patients or clients.
The great advantage of LIS is that it decreases the TAT or turnaround time from processing of specimens to giving the test results. Ideally, LIS is a comprehensive system that works under various components that make up a complex transmission process to streamline its role within the laboratory and the patients.
Those patients’ information is coded by the host of the system and technically all the data is under security controls and regulations that make the patients’ or clients’ personal information confidential in some followed terms. It includes the patient’s basic information, type of test, date of the specimen being collected, schedules or the turnaround time, and important details that should be pinned by the patients.
Regarding its security controls, the system will create a barcode or authentication for users to protect their information and test results, with a minimum level of granted accessibility. LIS ensures that each patient is well-protected and supervised through validation checks.
When it comes to storage management, the system organizes the data on each of the patient’s information and the test results. Confidential information and data within each patient will undergo encryption and security guidelines from all unauthorized access, wherein only health workers and patients can access that information.
In the retrieval of the test results of each patient, the system automatically processes the result with validation from the laboratory and is recorded in the database. Results are checked accordingly and underwent procedures or data analysis to test their accuracy and precision. Once the results are marked as precise and accurate, the system will finalize the results for retrieval. A Laboratory Information System plays a vital role in the medical field in improving patient health outcomes while securing their information and generating accurate operations as a healthcare systematic service.
