    • This slide shows the elastic cartilage found in the ear. Similar to hyaline cartilage, the elastic cartilage also contains chondrocytes, which is responsible for synthesizing collagen as well as other ECM components; perichondrium, which is essential for the growth and maintenance of cartilage; and a matrix. The only difference between a hyaline and an elastic cartilage is it contains abundant network of elastic fibers, however in this photo the elastin fibers are not visible. The main function of this type of cartilage is to provide flexible shape and support of soft tissues.
