Epithelial tissues serve as barriers between environments, and practically all chemicals must pass through the epithelium. As an interface tissue, epithelium performs a variety of roles, including:
Radiation, desiccation, poisons, and physical damage protection for the underlying tissues
Absorption of chemicals in the lining of the digestive system with unique changes.
Chemical regulation and excretion between the underlying tissues and the bodily cavity.
Hormone secretion into the blood vascular system. Sweat, mucus, enzymes, and other products transported via ducts are secreted by the glandular epithelium.
Perception of feeling.
