Muscle tissue is a type of specialized tissue found in animals that acts by contracting and applying forces to various regions of the body. Muscle tissue is made up of muscle cell fibers that are joined in sheets and fibers. These sheets and fibers are known as muscles, and they regulate an organism’s motions as well as many other contractile processes. Muscles in animals are classified into three categories based on their function. While these muscles differ somewhat in appearance, they act in a similar manner.
Muscle tissue is classified into three categories in the muscular system: skeletal, cardiac, and smooth. Each type of muscle tissue in the human body has a distinct structure and function. Skeletal muscle is responsible for the movement of bones and other structures. Cardiac muscle contracts in order for the heart to pump blood. To facilitate body processes, the smooth muscle tissue that forms organs such as the stomach and bladder changes shape.
