Given that it covers the human body, the integumentary`s most obvious role is physical protection. The skin is a complex network of cells, with each layer contributing to the skin’s overall strength. The epidermis has an exterior layer composed of dead keratin layers that can withstand the wear and tear of the outside world, whereas the dermis supplies the epidermis with blood and contains nerves that, among other things, alert the epidermis to danger. The hypodermis provides physical cushioning to any mechanical shock through adipose storage, and the glands release protective coatings throughout the body. Hairs throughout the body prevent dangerous particles from entering the eyes, ears, nose, and other parts of the body, while the nails protect the digits, which are prone to repeated stress, by generating a hard covering. Because it works as a physical barrier that keeps infections from entering the body, the skin is the body’s first line of defense. Junction proteins, which are reinforced by keratin filaments, bind cells together. The skin’s antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) and lipids operate as a biomolecular barrier, damaging bacterial membranes. A range of skin cells, including dendritic cells, macrophages, and glands, produce AMPs, such as defensins and cathelicidins, which are activated by proteolytic cleavage in response to stimulation.
