The integumentary system is the body’s biggest organ, serving to protect and maintain the internal environment by forming a physical barrier between the exterior and internal environments. Skin (dermis, epidermis, and hypodermis), related glands, hair, and nails are all part of this system. This system conducts numerous intricate functions in addition to its barrier function, including body temperature management, cell fluid maintenance, Vitamin D production, and stimulus sensing. To carry out these functions, the many components of this system operate together.
Physical protection is the most visible function of the integumentary system: skin is a densely woven network of cells, with each layer contributing to its strength. The dermis supplies blood to the epidermis and contains neurons that, among other things, alert the epidermis from danger. Protective coatings are produced by glands such as those on the palmar. Hairs on the scalp, for example, operate as a filter for hazardous particles.
