The liver serves a number of activities in the digestive process, including the production and secretion of bile and the processing and purification of blood carrying newly acquired nutrients from the small intestine. Bile has 2 functions: it aids in the absorption of lipids and it transports waste from the liver that cannot be processed by the kidneys.
The gallbladder is a pear-shaped reservoir that absorbs and stores bile produced by the liver. It is placed directly under the liver. To help in food digestion, the gallbladder transfers this stored bile into the small intestine.
The appendix is a small, 2- to 4-inch pouch located near where the large and small intestines meet. Researchers deduce that the appendix is designed to protect good bacteria in the gut. That way, when the gut is affected by a bout of diarrhea or other illness that cleans out the intestines, the good bacteria in the appendix can repopulate the digestive system and keep you healthy.
The appendix is a tiny pouch between the large and small intestines that measures 2 to 4 inches in size. The appendix is thought to preserve beneficial bacteria in the stomach, according to researchers. When you have diarrhea or another sickness that clears out your intestines, the beneficial bacteria in your appendix can repopulate the digestive system and keep you healthy.
