Its job in digestion is straightforward: to transport food boluses from the pharynx to the stomach. The esophagus originates at the rear of the mouth cavity as an extension of the pharynx. The blood then travels down the neck adjacent to the trachea, down the thoracic cavity, and via the diaphragm to the abdominal cavity, where it connects with the stomach.
