Each woman has two ovaries, one on each side, responsible for producing egg cells known as ova or oocytes. The oocytes are transferred to the fallopian tube, where fertilization takes place. It then transforms into a fertilized egg, which moves along the uterus while the uterine lining thickens in response to the reproductive cycle’s normal hormones.-
The outer surface of each of the ovaries is covered by a capsule. This surface is covered by a simple cuboidal epithelium called the germinal epithelium. A layer of dense irregular connective tissue known as tunica albuginea supports the epithelium. The ovary has a cortex, which contains the ovarian follicles, and a highly vascular medulla that has coiled arteries known as helicine arteries. -
The epithelial cells and formed follicles surround the oocytes. Many primordial follicles can be identified in the ovary, especially on the edges of the cortex. In addition, there are lesser follicles in the different phases of development.
