Histology Art (MT 30 – J) 4 years ago Urethra – Urine leaves the urinary bladder through the urethra. Its walls are made up of smooth muscles, and it is lined with epithelial tissue. The urethra in males are longer than females. It functions both for urine and semen. It has 3 sections: prostatic urethra, membranous urethra, and spongy (penile) urethra.Ureter – It transports urine from the kidney to the bladder. Cross-section of the ureter reveals four layers: transitional epithelium, lamina propria, muscularis externa, adventitia. It has two to three layers of transitional epithelium in the upper ureter. It has umbrella cells that change shape depending on the distention of the ureter. Its lamina propria is composed of a thick layer of dense irregular connective tissue rich in collagen and elastic fibers.
Loop of Henle – It is found within the kidneys and are responsible for the reabsorption of sodium and water. Its lumen is lined with simple squamous epithelium.
