Primary health care addresses the people’s health needs on a daily basis. It supports us from the very beginning of our lives to adolescence and to adulthood. From the day we are born, vaccines are being administered to us to be able to keep us and our communities safe against infectious disease. Its services are to educate and guide us to good nutrition and have healthy physical activity habits. The population of people enjoying these services is not limited for it is for people of all ages. It teaches us to take charge of our health and confidently manage our health needs with regular health providers and family members.
As we can observe, the facilities, services, and physical infrastructure in the Philippines is not that adequate to cater the needs of the people in terms of health. Many Filipinos lose their life without having seen a physician about their certain illness. Some of us can only see a physician at the time when we are sick because we cannot afford to have a regular check up. And so, Visayas Primary Health Care Services (VPHCS) left a different impression about the health system. They trained community health workers to provide services during outbreaks and these community health workers came from different sectors or groups such as the farmers’, fishermen’s, youth’s group and so on. This organization is very concerned to the people in the community because they educate them on helping to mitigate the spread of a certain disease. They also have a medical mission to give free services for those unfortunate ones. VPHCS have a vision of making the Philippine health care system to be accessible, affordable, relevant, and scientific to the people who are deprived to these services due to financial problems. Promoting primary health care is a strategy that may be the stepping stone towards the organization’s goal. They train the people such as students who will become health professionals soon to become sympathetic to those who are in need of their medical services. That is why as a medical student and soon a health practitioner, I desire to be part of any medical missions to be able to cater the needs of the people most especially in the community slums. I will feel that I have fulfilled my work when I will be able to help other people.
