(Reflection)Whole Person Education: The Goals and the Challenges

The president of Silliman University, Dr. Ben S. Malayang III, presents a persuasive viewpoint on the idea of whole person education. He describes it as an educational strategy that goes beyond the acquisition of academic knowledge and aims to develop well-rounded people who excel in the classroom, have strong moral principles, give back to the community, and have a strong connection to their spiritual beliefs. In his opinion, the United Board may play a crucial role in advancing the cause of whole person education due to its broad network among Asian higher education institutions. This could entail developing standards for accreditation that cover not only academic content but also character and religious development. Dr. Malayang is aware that in order to achieve this transition, it could be necessary to alter faculty attitudes and teaching strategies. The United Board could serve as a forum for these conversations and reforms.
