    Skin

    • Skin is considered the largest organ of the body and serves as one of first line of defenses that the body has. The skin is made up of a considerable amount of layers and each layer has its own special make up. The most superficial layer is the stratum corneum which is made up of 20-30 layers of dead cells that help prevent the loss of water.
The next layer would be only seen in areas with thick skin such as your callouses or the bottom of the foot. This layer is the stratum lucidum and is made up of 2-3 layers.
The stratum granulosum is the following layer that contains keratohyaline granules and is made up of 3-5 layers.
The stratum spinosum is the layer containing the Langerhans cells and the layers are joined by desmosomes.
The deepest layer of the epidermis is the stratum basale and is a single layer that consists of cuboidal as well as columnar cells. In addition this is where mitosis occurs.
The middle layer or the deep layer that lies below the epidermis is the dermis which consists of the superficial layer, the papillary layer, then the reticular layer that follows.
The subcutaneous layer then will be after the dermis and consists of adipose and areolar connective tissue. This layer is not technically considered part of the integument.
