What is a laboratory information system?

A laboratory information system is an information system designed for processing, storing, and managing patient data for medical processes and the testing needs of a clinical laboratory (McCudden et.al, 2020). It is a complete network of computer components used by laboratory professionals to coordinate their day-to-day workflow and reduce the workload needed to complete laboratory orders. It tracks clinical data for efficient analysis and observation and stores it in its database for physicians and laboratory professionals to assess. A laboratory information system can be customized and enhanced depending on the needs of the clinical laboratory.

What are its uses?

Laboratory information systems are versatile and can be used for multiple purposes like registration of patients and tests, collection and identification of specimens, generating results, and specimen and patient tracking. It is also useful in providing basic laboratory functions such as document management, calibration of instruments, maintenance requirements, and data entry (Dona, 2016). Using laboratory information systems can provide convenience for both the laboratory professionals and the patients.

What is the implication of AI as a medical technologist or in any job?

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) would probably be beneficial for medical technologists or any other worker. According to Hazarika (2020), artificial intelligence has the potential to become a supplementary tool for healthcare workers to guide themselves in decision making. AI will most likely transform the role of healthcare providers and elevate their performance as healthcare workers. It will help us become more productive, organized, and efficient in providing patient care. As a medical technologist, artificial intelligence will help me ensure that the laboratory reports I generate is without error and accurate. However, artificial intelligence can also pose some ethical challenges and risks. It could create a gap between the patient and the provider destabilizing the patient-provider relationship. Healthcare practitioners might also become too dependent on artificial intelligence and lessen their urge of learning new skills.
