To understand what an information system is, let’s first define what a system means. A system is a structure or arrangement of different elements to produce a function or purpose. It’s a collection of different components — combined as a single whole — to organize flows and processes. So incorporating this definition, an information system would be in a broader sense a system used to manage (collect, store, and control) data or information. A more specific definition is that it’s a combination of hardware, software, and telecommunication networks to manage data. And information systems are not limited to only storing and collecting data. Information systems are also used as tools to interpret data and create solutions that are best suited for the interpretation. We should note that data collection is done to obtain the capacity to do accurate and reliable analysis — the main reason why information systems were made.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.
-Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV)
