The topic of the article is the histology of the skin and hair follicle. The skin is made up of three layers: the outer epidermis, the dermis, and the hypodermis. Nerves, blood arteries, glands, and hair follicles are all part of it. The epidermis is a stratified squamous epithelium that is constantly regenerating. It is made up of keratinocytes (80%) and dendritic cells (20%), which include melanocytes, Langerhans cells, and Merkel cells. Keratinocytes are grouped in layers that indicate distinct phases of development in standard histology, whereas melanocytes and Langerhans cells show as clear cells between the basal and supra-basal cells of the epidermis. The Merkel cells are difficult to identify. Immunocytochemistry is the sole way to identify dendritic processes in dendritic cells.

    • Hair is made up of dead keratinised cells arranged in columns. A central medulla, or core (not evident in fine hairs), is surrounded by a keratinised cortex, and the outer third layer is highly keratinised and creates the thin hard cuticle on the exterior of the hair.
