The integumentary is an organ system consisting of nails, hair, skin, and exocrine glands. Its primary function is to protect the inside of the body from environmental elements such as bacteria, pollution, and UV rays from the sun. The skin and its associated structures also serve to retain bodily fluids, eliminate waste, and regulate body temperature. The integumentary system collaborates with all other bodily systems, including the nervous, cardiovascular, and digestive systems, to carry out all of its functions in aiding the internal body’s stability.

Despite of its importance, the skin, especially the color, is always subjected to discrimination. Discrimination based on skin color, also known as colorism or shadeism, is a form of prejudice or discrimination in which people of similar ethnicity or perceived race are treated differently based on the social implications of the cultural meanings associated with skin color.

In accordance with our assignment, I created this histology art to emphasize that skin color is irrelevant. That color is there for a reason. Melanin, a skin pigment, absorbs harmful UV rays, protecting us from cellular damage caused by UV light exposure. When viewed under a microscope, integumentary tissues are a sight to behold. All of them appear to be works of art created by our Almighty Father.
