    It is hard to move epithelial tissue cells because they are tightly packed together with a small amount of intercellular material. Because tissues cover and line the cells, each cell has a surface that isn’t in contact with any other cells on its side. A non-cellular basement membrane connects the cells to the connective tissue on the other side of the free surface. This membrane comprises carbohydrates and proteins made by cells in the epithelium and connective tissue.

    Epithelial cells can be squamous, cuboidal, or columnar in shape and one layer or many. They can also be in a single layer or many.
