    We know little about the histological composition of the sinoatrial (SA) node because of the small number of small studies with unequally distributed ages and subjective evaluations of nodal composition. The SA nodes of 200 normal hearts were digitally analyzed in this study to determine their histologic composition. Nodal area and nodal fat content (5%) increased quadratically with age, peaking in the fifth to eighth decades. A higher BMI (25 kg/m2) was linked to higher fat content. No gender differences were noted. The mean nodal collagen ranged from 7.1% to 50.3% without age or BMI (BMI). Less than 50% collagen content in SA lymph nodes suggests pathologic fibrosis. These findings add to our understanding of the SA node\'s anatomy. This article concludes that Sinoatrial (SA) node collagen does not increase with age or show a relationship with body mass index (BMI); however, SA nodes with >50% collagen (by nodal area) are abnormal across the age and gender spectrum. Thus, Nodal fat content is directly proportional to BMI.
