The participant’s answers to the open-ended question show that to make the lecture more effective, and most respondents gave the following answers.
– Students should be able to ask inquiries.
– Lecturers should provide students with areas to learn ahead of time so that students may read beforehand.
– Lecturers should foster an environment favorable to learning.
– They should avoid making derogatory statements.
– They should offer a timely response, speak loudly and courageously, and
– To keep pupils awake, they should intersperse the lectures with humor.
A related study about students’ preference for the lecture method states that they excelled in introductory economics, management, and accounting and believed they learned more through lectures. Furthermore, according to Baldwin (1993), students taught introductory financial accounting through lectures performed better than those taught by active learning approaches. Consequently, the majority of students selected lectures as the best teaching technique due to the following reasons;
– The teacher provides all knowledge related to the topic,
– It is a time-saving method, and students will be attentive in listening to the lecture while taking notes of essential concepts, which will be necessary for active recall during oral and written evaluations in class.
Finally, the finding confirms the generally held belief that the lecture style will remain the dominant teaching mode in tertiary institutions. According to the analysis, students continue to like the lecture because they feel they pay fees to be taught rather than to go out and find knowledge on their own. Given students’ preference for lectures, instructors must seek methods and means to make the lectures more entertaining and engaging. Lecturers should be expected to prepare and provide advanced reading assignments to students effectively. Lecturers should also have a thorough understanding of the topics to devise the appropriate ways to impart knowledge to students, allowing them to engage and not lose focus of the session.
