What is an Information System

Information systems (IS) is the study of complementary networks of hardware and software that people and organizations use to collect, filter, process, create, and distribute data (Prentice-Hall, 2010). Furthermore, it is also combinations of hardware, software, and telecommunications networks that people build and use to collect, create, and distribute useful data, typically in organizational settings. Lastly, information systems are interrelated components working together to collect, process, store, and disseminate information to support decision making, coordination, control, analysis, and visualization in an organization.

In essence, an information system can be viewed as a particular kind of communication system that uses data to process it as social memory, or data is transformed into information which then uses that information to acquire knowledge. Different organizations can employ information systems in different ways. References Zwass, V. (2022, December 15). Information system | Definition, Examples, & Facts | Britannica. Defining Information Systems

In my opinion, the term “Information System” refers to the system and/or process used by us, end-users, to obtain, store, and process data, as well as how we disseminate such data to other trusted establishments and networks. In today’s modern world, we might see these systems in large corporations or hospitals where there is a clear need to transfer data from one management system to another.
