In some cases, an array of radially arranged purple lines suggested reduplication of the basement membrane, whereas in others, sclerosis and thickening of the basement membrane zone were visible. Epidermis and dermis alterations in atopic eczema vary according to the nature of the clinical lesion. Vesicular areas demonstrated substantial intercellular edema with the production of so-called spongiotic vesicles, varied epidermal hyperplasia, typically of a psoriasiform type, and inflammatory infiltration of lymphocytes and lymphoblasts.-
